Arts in Action: Storytelling Workshop

  • Jubilee Artisans 128 East Lincoln Highway DeKalb, IL, 60115 United States (map)

By sharing personal experiences, individuals can not only learn about themselves, but teach others about histories that go unsaid. Speaking the truth is a powerful act of self-expression that fosters connection, understanding, and empowerment. By sharing stories, spaces can be opened for diverse and meaningful dialogue that can shape and change the way people perceive the world.

The DeKalb County History Center and Ellwood House Museum were awarded a grant from Healing Illinois to continue their Arts in Action initiative, which seeks to expand our understanding of DeKalb County history through ongoing research and community dialogue.

Funds will be used for programming through June 2025, including a workshop featuring former professor and award-winning storyteller Dr. Ada Cheng and culminating with a third Arts in Action exhibit at the Ellwood House Museum.

Dr. Cheng asks, “Do you want to tell stories to connect with people emotionally and to create intimate communities with others? Do you want to speak your truths out loud unapologetically and with a firm commitment to your lived experiences?”

If the answer is yes, join Dr. Cheng on March 13 for a “Community Storytelling Workshop” – a welcoming space to share stories and establish connections with people. Dr. Cheng will lead the discussion by exploring the principles of storytelling while giving tips on crafting and performing stories. This workshop gives the unique opportunity to express yourself in a supportive and encouraging environment.

This event will take place on March 13 from 6:30pm-8pm at Jubilee Artisans, 128 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. Registration is not required.
